Rhyl's Pillowcase Dress w Pockets

Okay, so I didn't make this one out of an actual pillowcase, but that's the style. It's so cute! And she LOVES pockets, so we had to add a couple. She wouldn't take off her twirly skirt, and the tulle was scratching her daddy and she couldn't climb on him, so I whipped up something else for her that I knew she'd want to put on. It's super cute. And it takes all of 20 minutes to make, start to finish! Well, I'm guessing it's about 20 minutes. Like I ever can do anything start-to-finish without stopping a zillion times. I am a mom, after all. :D I just used some of the leftover pink and yellow material from her twirly skirt. She loves it!

Very cute. I have some fabric picked out to make my dd one and haven't gotten around to it yet. I might have to do that this week. Adding pockets as well. Today my dd refused to put on something without pockets. Had to haul those baby dolls around somehow.

LOL--that's a familiar problem around here, too. :D

Very very cute!

When you measure the child for the dress what do you measure from (like from shoulder to thigh?) Just wondering... had a thought about making some pillowcase dresses for my neices but they're all older & would need more fabric than an actual pillowcase would provide! :)

1. I didn't measure anything, so here's my best guess: Back of neck to desired length (knees, shins, ankles, etc) + about 2 or 2.5 inches for seam allowance and room to fold over for the ribbon casing on the top around the neck. That last part will depend on how you sew. Do you like to use a large seam allowance? Do you use a serger?
2. Don't underestimate the amount of fabric in a pillowcase! On Rhyl it goes all the way from her neck to the floor with some left over. Of course, that wouldn't be the case for an 8 or 10 y/o, but if you're going to add a ruffle or something at the bottom, that might be all you need. Make sure they're not really big around, tho. A regular pillowcase makes a billowy shirt on me, so a small child would swim in it and it might look sloppy.

Thanks Melody! My neices are 6, 9 & 11. So they are a little older but all thin as rails! I think I might try this as a Christmas gift for them!
